In June 2025, the Missional Law team in Malawi conducted interviews at Dedza Prison, focusing on inmates accused of murder. The objective was to identify individuals whose cases merited legal support and intervention. Among those interviewed was Patrick Zamumtima, whose story immediately stood out as one requiring justice.
Patrick had been romantically involved with a married woman who was also engaged in relationships with two other men. On the day in question, Patrick visited her home around 3:00 PM and left at approximately 4:00 PM. The following morning, neighbors became concerned when she failed to respond to knocks on her door. Upon forcibly entering the house, they discovered she had died.
The neighbors promptly reported the incident to the police. During interrogation, one neighbor confirmed seeing Patrick leave the house at 4:00 PM. Patrick did not deny his presence during that time but firmly stated he had no involvement in her death. He acknowledged the moral complexity of the relationship, especially since he himself was married.
Despite the community police investigation concluding that Patrick was not responsible for the woman’s death, officers demanded a payment of $200 to close the case. Unable to pay, Patrick was arrested and later imprisoned.
Throughout his incarceration, Patrick’s wife and family remained supportive, regularly visiting him in prison. Moved by the injustice, Missional Law took up his case and launched a village-level investigation to uncover further details. Satisfied with the findings, the organization—working in collaboration with the Malawi Legal Aid Bureau—filed a bail application.
On 5th September 2025, Patrick Zamumtima was released from Dedza Prison and reunited with his family. His release marked a profound turning point in his life—a moment he describes as nothing short of miraculous. During his time in prison, Patrick reflected deeply and emerged with valuable life lessons.
Missional Law covered all legal and logistical costs associated with the case, reaffirming its commitment to justice and human dignity.
