Mr. Chimanda Yonah, aged 81 and born in 1945, was released on bail on 12 May 2026 after serving five years in custody at Ntchisi Prison (2022-2026). He stands as a suspect in an alleged murder that occurred in his home village. At the material time, however, Mr. Yonah was away at Mponela Trading Centre, attending the funeral of a relative. Upon returning to his residence in Kambudzi Village, approximately 30 Kilometers from Mponela, he discovered that another relative had died in his house while intoxicated with Kachasu (local beer). Despite the absence of direct evidence linking him to the death, police arrested him and charged him with murder. During his incarceration at Ntchisi Prison, Mr. Yonah suffered personal tragedy, losing his wife in January 2026. In September 2025, Missional Law, in partnership with the Legal Aid Bureau, Identified his case and initiated proceedings before the High Court, Lilongwe Registry. Justice Mzonde Mvula subsequently granted bail.
The bail application was facilitated by senior Paralegal Officer Moses Chione, who prepared statement recordings, drafted affidavits, and skeleton arguments later adopted by counsel in court. Following his release, a barefoot Lawyer briefed Mr. Yonah outside Prison regarding the conditions attached to his bail. Missional Law paid all the costs for the case from village investigation, internal running, bail bond, and transport from Lilongwe to Kasungu and Ntchisi. Missional Law also bought new clothes and gave Mr. Chimanda some cash for transport and food. Mr. Chimananda has been reunited with his family happily.
